If a child has an account that has the age set to 13 years or older, their account will have their privacy mode turned OFF. This allows them to freely chat in games, chat with other players, and receive private messages on their accounts. Chat for players 13 or older uses a “blacklist” filter. This filter restricts the use of and exposure to, inappropriate language and phrases. The content of these messages are typical of a Teen rated game. For players under 13 years old, ROBLOX strongly recommends that they have their privacy mode turned ON, which is the default setting for an Under 13 account. Privacy mode places the user on a “whitelist” chat system that allows these players to use typed chat in a filtered and protected way. This is done by preventing players from using or seeing certain words and phrases that could inadvertently disclose personal information or expose them to inappropriate material. The whitelist filter works by only allowing Under 13 players to see and send words/phrases on the whitelist. When another person types in a word or a phrase not on the whitelist, you will see #s in place of letters and words. When you type in words or phrases not on the whitelist, you will see what you typed, but other players will only see those words and phrases that are on the list. This filter will apply to any direct/limited audience chat, such as Personal Messages, Web/Party chat, and in-game chat. Public formats, such as Forums and Group Walls, are subject to the blacklist filter for all age sets. For example, pretend that the word "bird" is not on the whitelist of acceptable words. Your friend says in chat, “How’s the bird today?” You see “How’s the #### today?” If you say in chat “How’s the bird today?” you see all the words and letters you typed but others only see “How’s the #### today?” The whitelist will block personal information as well as profanity and most other inappropriate language that might be used. No filter or system is perfect and if you find a phrase or word that you feel should be blocked and included in the blacklist, or one that should be allowed and included in the whitelist, please send an email to [email protected]. I want to chat. How do I change the chat settings on my account? Under 13 players can provide a parent’s email address at account creation. If they do, we send an email to the parent explaining our privacy settings and a website link to review the settings on their child’s account. At any point after account creation, an account in the locked chat mode can request for their parent to grant free chat. To unlock an Under 13 account's chat mode, a parent will need to be logged into the child's account. Once logged in, they will need to click on the "Ask Parent To Change" button, located inside of the account settings. An email will be sent to the verified email address on the account. Click the link in the email and re-enter the child's birth date. Two options will then be presented; Privacy Mode ON (whitelist chat) and Privacy Mode OFF (blacklist chat).
